Salam Rindu buat blog..

Assalamualaikum & hai semua kwn2 ttcian..ehehe kalau ada yg baca laa..saya sgt rindu nak update blog hari2 mcm dulu tp malangnya keadaan sekarang amat tidak mengizinkan..maybe satu hari nanti boleh slalu2 update blog celoteh2 gitu kan..

Actually kenapa saya tak update blog adalah sbb saya agak tidak larat sekarang akibat morning sickness maybe..hehe yes..i'm pregnant..already 7 weeks nak masuk 8 weeks..

Alhamdulillah syukur sgt kepada Allah krn berikan kami rezeki ini..syukur sgt2..kebetulan hari saya buat UPT sendiri tu adalah hari Maulidurrasul Rasul..hari Ahad..kitorang baru balik Cameron Highland & sdg berada di KL masa tu coz ada wedding cousin..

Masa kat Cameron lagi dah agak mcm lain jer kali ni coz period dah lewat beberapa hari..tp taknak fikir sgt cuma bgtau hubby then kami mmg tak 'bersama' start hari tu sbb nak jaga baby (if betul pregnant masa tu laa..) so takde laa honeymoon sgt..takpe yg penting baby sehat..tp mommynye tak larat..jalan ke Cameron pulak pusing2 so mmg laa pening setiap masa..dgn sejuknye..mmg tak enjoy sgt holliday tuh..cuma jalan2 kat pasar..tgk flower flowery yg cantik2 colorful..isyy itu jer yg best..heheh

Bile dah sampai KL saya bertekad nak buat UPT sendiri, sbb mcm nak pastikan..taknak asyik terfikir2 dan tertgu2..if -ve so saya takde laa akan berfikir sgt walaupun mungkin akan berasa sedikit frust..tapi Alhamdulillah seperti yg dijangka 'double line'. Ya Allah perasaan masa tu mmg x dpt digambarkan..hanya Allah shj yg tahu..

Masa 5 - 6 week yg lepas saya agak tak larat sesgt..kalau weekend tu mmg tak boleh nak bgn..rasa mcm takde tenaga nak bgn..tak muntah pun cume pedih perut..maybe sbb saya byk angin..perut saya sentiasa pedih even saya mkn sejam sekali..kalau teruk sgt, bile mkn akan rasa nak keluar blk..begitu lah cerita nya..until now..still pedih2..so mmg mulut sentiasa mengunyah untuk elakkan dr perut ada ruang kosong..ibarat gitu lah..hehe

Mgu ni pulak hubby kene chicken pox..so kami mmg berhati2 sbb bahaya kan..tidur pun asing2..mkn tak share baju2 yg nak basuh pun kene asing..duduk pun jauh melainkan masa nk letakkan ubat kat bdn die..byk pulak tuh..sian papa baby..tak sehat..tp Alhamdulillah skali lagi baby sgt behave mgu ni..baik sgt sampai mommy rasa larat nak buat semua keje rumah walaupun kdg2 perut pedih2 n penat bile dah buat byk kerja..biase hubby tlg basuh kain, kemas rumah, jemur kain, beli mkn siap2..tp mgu ni semua kene buat sendiri..larat pulak tu..Allah mmg maha adil..die tahu apa yg terbaik utk kite..

Tadi jugak gi scan kali ke-2, yg 1st masa 5 weeks, nampak bulat jer (kantung laa tu kot)..this 2nd time dah ada heart beat..Alhamdulillah baby is doing fine now..doktor ckp don worry baby sehat..scan sbb nak tgk dah ada heart beat ke tak je..bile dah pasti ada baru saya rasa confident..dan amat berharap Allah kurniakan kesihatan buat kami sehingga saat baby akan dilahirkan..

Buat rakan2 TTC,saya doakan kamu semua akan dikurniakan zuriat juga suatu hari nanti insyaAllah..pasti ada kalau kite terus berusaha, berdoa & berserah kpd nya..

Mcm saya nak dijadikan cerita, few months sblm ni saya mmg agak culas nak mkn supplement, susu kambing, serbuk kurma..cuma saya jaga dr segi pemakanan shj..air2 gas mmg dh stop lama..buah2 yg panas2 bisa2 pun x mkn..tgk durian terliur jugak tp tahan lah..berdoa..amalkan doa dr Darussyifa setiap kali lepas solat dan akhir skali berserah lah kpdnya..sensungguh nya Allah yg berkuasa keatas segala galanya..

Masih belum buat buku pink..InsyaAllah next week..

Unexplained Infertility

Hari ni nak bercerita tentang Unexplained Infertility..

Sumber dari sini: http://www.advancedfertility.com/unexplai.htm

Unexplained Infertility Background, Tests and Treatment Options
Definition of Unexplained Infertility
Infertility cases in which the standard infertility testing has not found a cause for the failure to get pregnant. Unexplained infertility is also referred to as idiopathic infertility. Another way to explain it is the "doctors can't figure it out" group.
What Is Standard Infertility Testing?
The definition of what "standard testing" consists of is not agreed upon by all experts. Medical studies have reported that 0-26% of infertile couples have unexplained infertility. The most commonly reported figures are between 10-20% of infertile couples.
However, those percentages are from studies in which all the women had laparoscopy surgery to investigate the pelvic cavity for pelvic scarring and endometriosis. Laparoscopy surgery is no longer done as part of the routine fertility workup. Therefore, we are not finding all of the causes of infertility that we used to - leaving many more couples in the unexplained category.
·        The current rate of unexplained infertility is about 50% for couples with a female partner under age 35, and about 80% by age 40 (see discussion below about age)
·         In reality, there are probably hundreds of "causes" of infertility
·        There are a lot of things that have to happen perfectly in order to get pregnant and have a baby
·         As an overly simplified example of the science involved:
·        The hormones that stimulate egg development must be made in the brain and pituitary and be released properly
·        The egg must be of sufficient quality and be chromosomally normal
·        The egg must develop to maturity
·        The brain must release a sufficient surge of the LH hormone to stimulate final maturation of the egg
·        The follicle (eggs develop in structures called follicles in the ovaries) must rupture and release the follicular fluid and the egg
·        The tube must "pick up" the egg
·        The sperm must survive their brief visit in the vagina, enter the cervical mucous, swim to the fallopian tube and "find" the egg
·        The sperm must be able to get through the cumulus cells around the egg and bind the shell (zona pellucida) of the egg
·        The sperm must undergo a biochemical reaction and release their DNA package (23 chromosomes) into the egg
·        The fertilized egg must be able to divide
·        The early embryo must continue to divide and develop normally
·        After 3 days, the tube should have transported the embryo down into the uterus
·        The embryo must continue to develop and expand into a blastocyst
·        The blastocyst must hatch out of its shell
·        The endometrial lining of the uterus must be properly developed and receptive
·        The hatched blastocyst must attach to the endometrial lining and "implant"
·        Many more miracles in early embryonic and fetal development must then follow...
A weak link anywhere in this chain will cause failure to conceive
The above list is very oversimplified, but the point is made. There are literally hundreds of molecular and biochemical events that have to happen perfectly in order to have a pregnancy develop.
The standard tests for infertility barely scratch the surface and are really only looking for obvious factors, such as blocked tubes, abnormal sperm counts, ovulation problems, etc. These tests do not address the molecular issues at all. That is still for the future.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unexplained Infertility and Female Age
The likelihood of a diagnosis of unexplained infertility is increased substantially in women 35 and over - and greatly increased in women over 38. The reason for this is that there are more likely to be egg quantity and quality problems as women age. Since we do not have a "standard category" called egg factor infertility, these couples sometimes get lumped in to the "unexplained" infertility category.
Most women over 40 who try to get pregnant will have difficulty, and fertility over age 44 is rare - even in women who are ovulating regularly every month. The point is that the older the female partner, the more likely that there is an egg related issue causing the fertility problem. Unfortunately, there is currently no specific test for "egg quality".
Mild Endometriosis
Some experts would also consider infertility associated with mild endometriosis to be in the "unexplained" category. This is because a cause and effect relationship has not been definitely established between mild endometriosis and fertility problems.
Chance for Getting Pregnant On Own - Without Fertility Treatment - For Couples With Unexplained Infertility
The duration of infertility is important. The longer the infertility, the less likely the couple is to conceive on their own. After 5 years of infertility, a couple with unexplained infertility has less than a 10% chance for success on their own.
One study showed that for couples with unexplained infertility and over 3 years of trying on their own, the cumulative pregnancy rate after 24 months of attempting conception without any treatment was 28%. This number was found to be reduced by 10% for each year that the female is over 31.
(Reference: Collins, JA and Rowe, TC. Fertility and Sterility 1989;52:15-20.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Treatment options for unexplained infertility
Ovarian Stimulation and/or Intrauterine Insemination, IUI
Intrauterine insemination vs. timed intercourse (sometimes called sex, or BD, baby dance) - no medications involved
This has been studied and there is an increased chance for pregnancy with IUI for unexplained infertility as compared to timed intercourse. However, intercourse should be more fun than IUI - and should be cheaper too.
Clomid and Timed Intercourse for Unexplained Infertility
3-6 months of treatment with Clomid pills (clomiphene citrate) might improve fertility by as much as 2 times as compared to no treatment. This is a very low level infertility treatment. Infertility specialists do not usually recommend Clomid treatment( without insemination) for unexplained infertility for women over the age of about 35. Most fertility specialists do not use it (without IUI) on any couples with unexplained infertility. If a woman is already having regular periods and ovulating one egg every month, giving Clomid, which will probably stimulate the ovaries to release 2 or 3 eggs per month (instead of one) is not really fixing anything that is broken - and is not likely to be successful.
Clomid Plus Insemination, IUI for Unexplained Infertility
Treatment with Clomid tablets plus IUI improves fertility rates. For unexplained infertility, studies have shown that for women under 35, monthly success rates for Clomid plus insemination are about 10% per cycle. This pregnancy rate holds up for about 3 tries and the success rate is considerably lower after that. More about success rates with IUIs is on the insemination page and on the Clomid for unexplained infertility page. The insemination component boosts fertility more than the Clomid does - but success rates are higher when both are used together.
Letrozole or Femara is another oral medication that is sometimes used to stimulate development of multiple follicles during infertility treatment
Injectable Gonadotropins (Shots Of FSH Hormone) Plus Intrauterine Insemination, IUI
Several studies showed improved pregnancy success rates with injectable FSH plus IUI treatment as compared to no treatment.
Injectable Gonadotropins Plus Intercourse
This is less extensively studied. It is not yet known whether the ovarian stimulation and the insemination have independent beneficial effects or whether their beneficial effects are only seen when they are used in combination. Most likely they both independently increase fertility potential, with relatively more fertility benefit coming from the IUI component.
Assisted Reproductive Technologies and IVF As Treatment For Unexplained Infertility
In vitro fertilization (IVF) has high success in young women with normal ovarian reserve testing and unexplained infertility. Most couples with unexplained infertility with a female partner under age 40 will try about 3 artificial inseminations and if not pregnant - do IVF.

Kecil nya hati ini..

Entry ke-2 di tahun baru 2012.

Niat dihati ditahun baru ni tak mahu terlampau emosi tapi nak buat mcm mane..mulut orang kite tak boleh nak tahan, tak boleh nak control, die nak cakap apa ikut suka hati lah kan..hati saya pun sama, tak dapat nak ditahan dr menjadi lebih kecik dr biasa..

Alkisahnya esok kan hari pertama sekolah bermula, ramai lah yg ambil cuti untuk urus2kan anak2 sekolah terutama yg baru pertama kali masuk sekolah rendah/tadika. Kat situ dah sikit2 terasa, org lain semua duk bercerita soal anak..sedih pulak rase..pastu cerita pasal org honeymoon..kakak A kata "Suami kite ckp tak payah honeymoon sbb kitorang tak honeymoon pun anak berderet,tiap2 tahun dpt anak". Pastu kakak B pun kata kat membe bujang sorang yg tgh tgu masa nak kawen, "haa nanti awk kawen trus bwk berita gembira, kawen bln ni, bln depan dah lekat" then gelak2..hebatnye laa org kan..kawen bln ni boleh pregnant bulan depan..lepas tu kite pulak terkena tempias sama.."haa ni kene usaha lebih sikit..usaha laa sikit.." aduhh rase mcm tersentap jer..jwpan saya "saya redha jer, ayat ombak rindu kata..kalau ade rezeki ade laa". Kakak B komen lagi, "Redha mmg laa redha,tp kene laa usaha, kene balajar lebih sikit, usaha lebih sikit"

Apa perasaan kawan2 bile org cakap mcm tu?
Kecik rasa hati ni kan..korang tahu ker usaha saya tahap mana? Korang tahu ker kesusahan kami banyak mana? Korang tahu ker kami kene berkorban macam2 untuk dptkan anak? Korang tak tahu tp korang kata saya tak usaha..rasa mcm nak menitik jer air mata td..tapi sabar ajer laa..saya terima jer apa diorang nak cakap..boleh gelak2 sekali tp dalam hati Allah shj yg tahu..

Actually 2,3 hari ni mood mcm tak berapa nak ok. Symptom2 PMS dah datang. Hari ni CD28. Mmg kalau ikut esok period,tanda2 pun dah ada..nampak nye takde rezeki lagi bulan ni..ikut perasaan mmg nak menitik air mata tp sabar ajer lah, menitik air mata darah sekalipun kalau dah ditetapkan begitu, kite tak boleh nak ubahnya kan..yakin lah bahawa ada hikmahnya setiap apa yg berlaku..

Actually saya mcm dah blank, tak tahu nak buat ape utk teruskan usaha TTC kami. Result hasil pemeriksaan doktor ok. Doktor kata both of us takde masalah, rahim saya ok, tahap kesuburan saya pun ok sampai doktor tak bg saya mcm chlomid. So, apa saya nak buat sekarang, kene tunggu jer yer? Susahnye nak terima hakikat bila masa period tu datang..sangat2 sedih Allah sahaja yg tahu..

Ya Allah, Ya Tuhanku..tabahkanlah hati hambamu ini..

Taknak kawan semua org..semua org buat saya sedih hari ni..

CD1 - Cycle 3 after HSG

Kisah sedih dtg lagi menjenguk kami buat kesekian kalinya. Kami terima dgn redha, semuanya sudah ditentukan Allah. Mudah mudahan Allah perkenankan doa kami suatu hari nanti..

Got my AF today..so, this going to be my 3rd cycle after HSG.

Tak sure laa apa nak buat next step. Blood test normal & result bagus, dah scan byk kali kedudukan & keadaan rahim semua ok. Suami pun ok. HSG ok. Ape lagi nak buat ye..next appointment is luse 07/12/2011 tak tau laa doktor nak suh buat ape, mkn chlomid lg ker..before ni dok ckp buat HSG dulu, if tak pregnant maybe boleh proceed iui..Tapi proses IUI kt GH ni mcm mane yer? Ke doktor suggest jer then kene gi private? Ada siapa2 berpengalaman?

Ada org ckp stop treatment sekejap, rest dulu maybe sbb kite stress duk fikir pasal treatment itu & ini tp rase mcm rugi masa laa..this year dah 29,next yr umur dah 30..means kene cepat2, pregnant bile umur dh meningkat ni mcm2 problem nanti..kata org jugak tu..mana satu nak ikut ni..tp yg pasti tak boleh putus asa..Allah tak suka pd hambanya yg cepat putus asa..teruskan usaha, berdoa & seterusnya bertawakal lah..

Saya masih belum cuba mkn Fertilaid, sekarang cuma fokus Serbuk Bunga Kurma & mkn multi vit + vit b + folic acid..maybe lepas ni boleh cube Fertilaid pulak..En Suami sekali..nescafe, tea, mknan2, buah buahan yg org kate tak elok mkn pun dah dielakkan sejak awl lg..tgh period ni boleh x nk mkn puas puas? Nak mkn mangga, nak minum air kelapa, nak conconut shake, nak minum A&W float..eee banyak nye takleh mkn kan..

Comelkan tgn baby ni..
.

Nak baby tgn comel cam nih..huhu

Im in 2WW -2nd cycle after HSG Test is done-

Haven't write about my TTC progress after I had my HSG last month. Actually i'm not gonna stress thinking about my 2WW. Thinking about "Am I pregnant?" or not..Please mind, don think about it okay..just let it be..

Symptom?? Period or pregnant?
1) Nausea sometimes (because of acidic maybe, mmg selalu mcm ni if mkn tak tentu masa)
2) Feel bloated (because of acidic also, I guess..mmg selalu jugak mcm ni if nak dekat period)
3) This month stomach giv me a strange sound and I can feel it. (kriuk..kriuk..biasenye time nak period jer tp this month sentiasa) mkn Gaviscon pun tak ada apa2 perubahan

Nothing much, thats my normal symptom if my period is on d way..but hope it is not..

May Allah bless us and give us a healthy baby one day..InsyaAllah..

Regards,
Putri

Perjalanan masih jauh..

Bile bekerja, terikat dgn waktu kerja & peraturan kerja amatlah besar dugaan bg kami. Nak buat sesuatu agak terbatas, bukan sbb mls, bukan sbb susah tp sbb komitmen terhadap kerja & takut untuk melakukan sesuatu yg bkn urusan kerja diwaktu kerja. Cthnya bersolat sunat (x termasuk solat 5 waktu), mengaji, berzikir. Waktu2 begini tiba2 rasa alangkah bahagianya kalau jd surirumah sepenuh masa. Nak buat ape ikut sukahati pun boleh. Nak solat sunat byk2,nak mengaji byk2,nak zikir & doa lama2 setiap kali lepas solat, semua pun boleh. Tp apakan daya saya wanita bekerjaya..namun saya bersyukur dgn rezeki yg Allah beri ini. Rezeki membantu suami meringankan bebannya membayar rumah, kereta,bil2,hutang2,makan & pakai seisi rumah. Banyak kan,so saya bersyukur krn dikurniakan rezeki bekerja ini. Mudah mudahan Allah permudahkan segala urusan kami & murahkan rezeki kami. InsyaAllah..

Niat dihati kalau dikurniakan zuriat suatu hari nanti, saya mahu jd fulltime housewife. Boleh ker?
Nak jaga anak sendiri, jaga makan pakai suami sendiri, didik anak sendiri. Biarlah org kata rugi belajar tinggi2 tp duduk rumah jer,tak rugi rasenye bile kite niat melakukan sesuatu krn Allah Ta'ala. Didik anak perlu ilmu juga kan? Apa salahnya..hehe

Sekadar bercerita diptg Sabtu..sekian..

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) Test

Date: 20 October 2011 (Day 10)
Venue: General Hospital, Kuantan
Duration: Lebih kurang 15 minit

A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is an X-ray test that looks at the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes and the area around them. It often is done for women who are having a hard time becoming pregnant (infertile).
During a hysterosalpingogram, a dye (contrast material) is put through a thin tube that is put through the vagina and into the uterus. Because the uterus and the fallopian tubes are hooked together, the dye will flow into the fallopian tubes. Pictures are taken using a steady beam of X-ray (fluoroscopy) as the dye passes through the uterus and fallopian tubes. The pictures can show problems such as an injury or abnormal structure of the uterus or fallopian tubes, or a blockage that would prevent an egg moving through a fallopian tube to the uterus. A blockage also could prevent sperm from moving into a fallopian tube and joining (fertilizing) an egg. A hysterosalpingogram also may find problems on the inside of the uterus that prevent a fertilized egg from attaching (implanting) to the uterine wall. See a picture of a hysterosalpingogramcamera.

Why It Is Done

A hysterosalpingogram is done to:
  • Find a blocked fallopian tube. The test often is done for a woman who is having a hard time becoming pregnant. An infection may cause severe scarring of the fallopian tubes and block the tubes, preventing pregnancy. Occasionally the dye used during a hysterosalpingogram will push through and open a blocked tube.
  • Find problems in the uterus, such as an abnormal shape or structure, an injury, polyps, fibroids, adhesions, or a foreign object in the uterus. These types of problems may cause painful menstrual periods or repeated miscarriages.
  • See whether surgery to reverse a tubal ligation has been successful.

How To Prepare

Before a hysterosalpingogram, tell your doctor if you:

How To Prepare continued...

This test should be done 2 to 5 days after your menstrual period has ended to be sure you are not pregnant. It should also be done before you ovulate the next month (unless you are using contraception) to avoid using X-rays during an early pregnancy. You may want to bring along a sanitary napkin to wear after the test because some leakage of the X-ray dye may occur along with slight bleeding.
You may need to sign a consent form that says you understand the risks of a hysterosalpingogram and agree to have the test done. Talk to your doctor about any concerns you have about the need for the test, its risks, how it will be done, or what the results will mean. To help you understand the importance of this test, fill out the medical test information formpdf(What is a PDF document?).

How It Is Done

A hysterosalpingogram usually is done by a radiologist in the X-ray room of a hospital or clinic. A radiology technologist and a nurse may help the doctor. A gynecologist or a doctor who specializes in infertility (reproductive endocrinologist) also may help with the test.
Before the test begins, you may get a sedative or ibuprofen (such as Advil) to help you relax and to relax your uterus so it will not cramp during the test. You will need to take off your clothes below the waist and drape a gown around your waist. You will empty your bladder and then lie on your back on an examination table with your feet raised and supported by stirrups. This allows your doctor to look at your genital area.
An X-ray may be taken to make sure that there is nothing in the large intestine (colon) that could block the view of the uterus and fallopian tubes. Sometimes a laxative or enema is given a few hours before the test to empty the large intestine.
Your doctor will put a smooth, curved speculum into your vagina. The speculum gently spreads apart the vaginal walls, allowing him or her to see the inside of the vagina and the cervix. The cervix may be held in place with a clamp called a tenaculum. The cervix is washed with a special soap and a stiff tube (cannula) or a flexible tube (catheter) is put through the cervix into the uterus. The X-ray dye is put through the tube. If the fallopian tubes are open, the dye will flow through them and spill into the belly where it will be absorbed naturally by the body. If a fallopian tube is blocked, the dye will not pass through. The X-ray pictures are shown on a TV monitor during the test. If another view is needed, the examination table may be tilted or you may be asked to change position.
After the test, the cannula or catheter and speculum are removed. This test usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.

How It Feels

You probably will feel some cramping like menstrual cramps during the test. The amount of pain you have depends on what problems the doctor finds and treats during the test.

Risks

There is always a small chance of damage to cells or tissue from being exposed to any radiation, including the low levels of radiation used for this test. The chance of damage from the X-rays is generally very low compared with the potential benefits of the test.
There is a small chance (less than 1 in 100) of a pelvic infection, endometritis, or salpingitis after the test. The chance may be higher for women who have had pelvic infections before. Your doctor may give you antibiotics if he or she thinks you might develop a pelvic infection.
There is a small chance of damaging or puncturing the uterus or fallopian tubes during the test.
There is a small chance of an allergic reaction to the iodine X-ray dye, especially if you are allergic to any shellfish.
In rare cases, if an oil-based dye is used, the oil can leak into the blood. This can cause blockage of blood flow to a section of the lung (pulmonary embolism). Most hysterosalpingogram tests use water-based dyes.

After the test

After the test, some of the dye will leak out of the vagina. You also may have some vaginal bleeding for several days after the test. Call your doctor immediately if you have:
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding (soak more than one tampon or pad in one hour).
  • A fever.
  • Severe belly pain.
  • Vaginal bleeding that lasts for more than 3 to 4 days.

Results

A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is an X-ray test that looks at the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes and the area around them.

Hysterosalpingogram
Normal:The shape of the uterus and fallopian tubes are normal. The fallopian tubes are not scarred or damaged. The dye flows freely from the uterus, through the fallopian tubes, and spills normally into the belly.
No objects (such as an intrauterine device, or IUD), tumors, or growths are seen in the uterus.
Abnormal:Fallopian tubes may be scarred, malformed, or blocked so that the dye does not flow through the tubes and spill into the belly. Possible causes of blocked fallopian tubes include pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or endometriosis.
The dye may leak through the wall of the uterus, showing a tear or hole in the uterus.
An abnormal uterus may show tissue (called a septum) that divides the uterus.
Growths, such as polyps or fibroids, may be present.

What Affects the Test

Reasons you may not be able to have the test or why the results may not be helpful include:
  • If your fallopian tube has a spasm. This may make a normal fallopian tube look blocked.
  • If the doctor cannot put a catheter in the uterus.
This test is not done on women who are having their period, are pregnant, or have a pelvic infection.

What To Think About

  • In some cases, a pelvic ultrasound test may be done instead of a hysterosalpingogram to find foreign objects in the uterus, such as an intrauterine device (IUD). For more information, see the topic Pelvic Ultrasound.
  • Some early tests to find the cause of infertility may include tests such as semen analysis and blood tests for luteinizing hormone (LH), progesterone, or follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). If these tests can't find the cause of infertility, a hysterosalpingogram may be done. For more information, see the topic Infertility Testing.
  • A hysterosalpingogram is done mainly for women who are having a hard time becoming pregnant. Some studies show that this test may help a woman's chance of becoming pregnant because the dye may remove mucus plugs, straighten the fallopian tubes, and break through thin scar tissue.
  • Hysteroscopy may be done instead of a hysterosalpingogram to look at the uterus. Another test called laparoscopy may also be done instead of a hysterosalpingogram to look at the fallopian tubes. A laparoscopy does not show whether the fallopian tubes are open, unless dye is injected during the laparoscopy. For more information, see the topics Hysteroscopy or Laparoscopy.
  • Another test, a sonohysterogram (SHG), may be more accurate than a hysterosalpingogram for looking at uterine fibroids or polyps. SHG uses ultrasound to watch the movement of a salt solution (saline) that is injected into the uterus. SHG does not use X-rays or an iodine dye.
  • If a blocked fallopian tube is the cause of infertility, an oil-based dye may be used during a hysterosalpingogram to remove the blockage. Some studies show that an oil-based dye may open up a blockage better than a water-based dye, but other studies have shown no difference between the two dyes.
  • Be sure your doctor knows if you take metformin (such as Glucophage) for diabetes or for any other reason, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), because of the possible interaction with the dye used in this test.
